Word Choice in the AI-Age

There have been some interesting articles on words used in AI writing. As I read those lists I was thinking about how this could impact me as a student or writer generally knowing that these have been called out for making me sound like an AI (I certainly don’t feel like an AI).

Two recent articles1 talk about word choice and the tells of AI generated text. The studies, which might fall into the general category of research into writing analytics, dive into peer reviews of articles and student essays to chart the frequency of words in transitions, adjective choice, and overall composition. Both summaries are worth a read.

As an example, in the case of peer reviews, they “used the word “meticulous” almost 3,400 percent more than reviews had the previous year.” That journal article itself is meticulous (ha) creating a list of 200 adjectives and adverbs used most frequently by AI.

However, (apparently also on the list along with “moreover” and “overall”) the inclusion of these words doesn’t mean you’re AI, just that you might sound like one.

Is your head spinning yet? AI designed to write like humans forcing human writers to try to avoid sounding like AI by filtering their word selection.

Words called out in both articles:
